Joe Coughlin from Live by Night by CalireBlackInk Joe Coughlin from Live by Night by CalireBlackInk

“He feared his son was too soft. For all his transgressions over the years, his lawlessness, his inability to obey Thomas or the rules or much anything, Joseph was the most open of his sons. You could see his heart through the heaviest winter coat”

This quote describes the character the best I think (so far)

I've read 150 pages of the book so far and the original version of the character is younger so I also took some elements from the book and how the character is described etc

I've been doing some quite big drawings lately (by big I mean detailed) so I went for something more simple and cartoony. Also, who said gangsters couldn't be cute?  Thoughts?

Another beautiful piece. It reminds me of something wonderfully nostalgic, but I really can't pinpoint it. I guess I love my mob movies, haha. And the features and clothing really made me think "mobster" before I got to the description. That quote suits his soft features well. His wonderful eyes and gentle smile says it all. I have no idea what this novel or book is or what it's about, but I'll check it out just from your art. You adapt words into art so well. Your work is just oh so lovely.

Yay! Check it :) At the moment, I'm reading the sequel. It's such a beautiful and sad book. It is indead about mobsters in Boston and Tampa, set in the late 20's. To make it short, it tells how a young local gangster makes his way through the criminal world and soon becomes on of the most feared, powerful and rich mobsters during Prohibition... And as you perfectly pointed out, his looks say it all. Because in both the book and the film, without spoiling you, he has a heart an is not really a bad man. And that's what the book is about. How much of a cruel man you have to become to get power, or rather, is it necessary?

On a side note, the author also wrote Shutter Island for example :)

Thanks :) I sometimes like to go back to markers. I mean I usually use markers and watercolours, but here except for the hair and eyes, it's all markers !

I love the smooth quality they have. I always use them for faces because they blend so nicely. Or at least that's what I think
